Before Replacing a Work Monitor for Six Months, Keep a Fallback Plan

A prospective XREAL 1S buyer asked about using glasses as a full-time work monitor while living abroad. Replies describe sharply different experiences: some wearers report productive long sessions, while others need frequent breaks or cannot comfortably read small text. Those are individual reports across several models, not a measured success rate for 1S.
The practical question is different from whether glasses can show a desktop. Could your work continue if a cable fails, a software update changes the workspace or the frame becomes uncomfortable? A portable display used occasionally has a different failure cost from the only display available for a six-month stay.
Rehearse the boring work
Before departure, use the exact work computer and approved connection for an ordinary working session. Include email, code review, spreadsheets, video-call controls and the application with your smallest essential labels. Record the text scaling that actually works. Do not compare glasses with a 27-inch monitor solely by the virtual diagonal advertised in a store.
Test access to the laptop's own screen and keyboard, too. Some tasks require switching attention between a physical device and the virtual display. A workspace that looks spacious in a screenshot can still make this transition inconvenient. Keep employer device and privacy policies in mind before installing optional desktop software.
Separate hardware from workspace software
XREAL's One-series specifications distinguish exact models and modes. A supported external display does not establish that a separate app creates multiple independent monitors on your operating system. Lensden's coding guide treats those as separate requirements.
The thread's writers do not provide one common firmware, operating system or optical fit. Their settings are useful starting questions, not a recipe to copy. An experience on One Pro cannot certify 1S, even when both appear in the same conversation.
Budget for losing the experiment
Keep access to a conventional screen until the workflow has proved useful for your own tasks. Pack a documented spare cable if the design permits replacement, and know how to resume work without optional spatial software. This is contingency planning, not a prediction that the glasses will fail.
If the only satisfactory setup needs repeated manual repositioning or text so large that essential windows no longer fit, the replacement goal has not been met. It may still be a useful travel screen. Source checked November 3, 2026; no Lensden endurance or productivity test.
